Negro Digest - April 1945
The Negro Digest magazine was created to uplift and educate African American people. The magazine was established in 1942 by John H. Johnson who later went on to start Johnson Publishing Company. The Negro Digest was Johnsons first magazine and he faced challenges financing it. He overcame the financial burden by requesting assistance from clients of the insurance company that he worked for. After the Negro Digest, Johnson also produced Ebony, Jet and Tan magazine. The Negro Digest was first published locally in Chicago.
The content of the Negro Digest included uplifting stories of African American people and their accomplishments as well as reprints of articles from other magazines. The format was based on the original Readers Digest publication. The Negro Digest ran until 1951 and then again from 1961 to 1976. In 1970, the magazine was renamed Black Word.
