Susie Monroe was a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, March 4, 1885 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Fl. She worked as a teacher, dressmaker and salon owner before being elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1948. Monroe was reelected to the House for 9 consecutive terms thereafter.
During her time in the house, Monroe worked on issues relating to equal opportunity, employment, public health, and housing. She sponsored legislation that prohibited discrimination based on color race, religious ancestry, and age by employers. She also worked in public health legislation that led her to secure appropriations for Jefferson medical college, and women's medical college of Pennsylvania during her last term in office. Monroe was an example of a new generation of African-American leaders in the postwar era, who was emblematic of a new generation of non-elite activists. Susie Monroe secured the support of constituents by emphasizing her organizational ties, accessibility, and responsiveness to community needs.
Monroe died while in office, November 7, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was interred at the Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
