The First Book of Negroes
Langston Hughes - 1952
James Mercer Langston Hughes was born on February 1,1901. He was a poet, social activist, author, and playright. Hughes was first published in 1921 in The Crisis which was the official magazine of the NAACP. From 1942-1962 Hughes wrote an in-depth weekly column in a leading black newspaper called The Chicago Defender. The First Book of Negros was published in 1952 and tells the story of Terry Lane, a young African American boy who lives in Harlem. Hughes wrote this title to be included in Franklin Watt’s First Book series which were the “first books” boys and girls could read to learn about any subject. The illustrations throughout the book were done by Ursula Koering, who illustrated many books within the First Books series.
