NAACP Fundraising Card 1940’s
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, is a civil rights organization in the United states formed in 1909. The focus of the organization was to strive to see the execution of the written and established 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. The 13th amendment abolished slavery and any involuntary servitude; the 14th gave citizenship to any person born in the US, including former slaves; and the 15th amendment gave African American Men the right to vote. Overall, the groups’ mission was to see equality for minority races in all aspects of life.
There were countless struggles and injustices that proved the need to form such an organization, but the final push that led to its inception were the Springfield, Illinois riots in 1908. In response to these riots, a group of white liberals called for a meeting to discuss racial injustice 60 individuals attended the meeting, seven of whom were African American.
