Underneath the Harlem Moon was first recorded by Howard Joyner in 1932. Joyner began singing in New York night clubs in the mid 1920’s under the name Bob Howard. Among other endeavors in the entertainment industry, he also hosted The Bob Howard show on CBS starting in 1948 making him the first African-American to host a regularly broadcasted network TV show.The music was written by Harry Revel and the lyrics were written by Mack Gordon.
Revel, who was born in England, came to the US to write music for musicals and film. Revel was inducted into the Music Hall of Fame in 1970. Mack Gordon was a composer and lyricist that was nominated for an Oscar 9 times in 11 years and won once.
