Georgia Gilmore Obituary NYT (1990)
Georgia Gilmore was born on February 5th, 1920 in Montgomery, Alabama. Gilmore remained in Alabama during adulthood and worked as a midwife and a cook at the National Lunch Company in Montgomery. She was known for her fiery temper and fearless resistance against racial injustices. In 1957 police arrested her son Mark while he was walking through a white-only neighborhood. She fought the charges and eventually they were dropped. On another occasion a white store clerk refused to sell to her grandson so she marched to the counter, took the clerks pistol from him, and hit him with it. Gilmore was also an essential participant in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. She used her culinary talents to make and sell meals to help finance the resistance. She also organized women and formed the Club From Nowhere where women would sell food out of their homes, at local establishments, and at protest meetings. Gilmore died on March 9, 1990 at 70 years old from peritonitis.
