Medgar Evers was born on July 2nd, 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi. Evers and his siblings walked 12 miles to attend segregated schools. Following graduation in 1943, Evers joined the army and served during WWII until 1945 when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After serving he went on to earn his Bachelors in business administration in 1952 from Alcom Agricultural and Mechanical College. Evers degree earned him a job as a salesman for T. R. M. Howards Magnolia Mutual Life Insurance Company in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, where he relocated to with his wife. While working there, he also worked with, and became president of, the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) wich organized actions for civil rights and became the NAACP field secretary for the state of Mississippi. Evers was assassinated in 1963 by a white supremesist.
