1983 THURGOOD MARSHALL memorial program - NYC
Thurgood Marshall stands beside Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X as one of the most influential people in the civil rights movement. Marshall was born July 2, 1908 to William Marshall, a steward for an exclusive club, and Norma, a kindergarten teacher. One of William Marshalls favorite things to do was go to the courthouse, listen to cases, then come back home to discuss them with his sons. After graduating from high school, Marshall attended Lincoln University, a historically black college in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lincoln, Marshall applied to the University of Maryland Law School but, even though he was overqualified, was rejected because of his race. So instead, Marshall attended Howard Law School in Washington, D.C and graduated magna cum laude in 1933.
