September 1980 Ebony Magazine - The Jeffersons
Ebony is a monthly magazine that was founded in 1945 by John H. Johnson. Its content focuses on news, culture and entertainment. Ebony was the first magazine geared towards African American readers to reach national circulation. By the beginning of the 21st century, its circulation had reached about 1.8 million people. Initially the content of the magazine was focused only on entertainment and sports figures but it soon opened up to focus on black achievements of all sorts. This entry highlights the popular sitcom The Jeffersons. After airing its first episode on January 18th 1975, The Jeffersons lasted 11 seasons and ran for 253 total episodes. Audiences first met the star couple George and Louise Jefferson on the show All In The Family where they lived in a working class neighborhood in Queens while George began his cleaning business. In the spin-off, George's business takes off and they are able to move into a luxury Manhattan apartment. The Jeffersons paved the way for future sitcoms featuring middle class black families such as the Cosby show.
